Our Mission
ParaCliffHangers expands the rock climbing community to include people with disabilities. We foster joy, empowerment, adventure, community, and equity through indoor, outdoor, and competitive climbing.
Our Values
-
We team up with groups to build relationships that benefit everyone. Together, we create more opportunities.
-
PCH works to create an environment where people can find community. We bring people together with fun, joyful, lasting connections.
-
Paraclimbers created PCH and are leaders at all levels. We speak about and represent the disability experience to show that it is part of the norm.
-
The PCH community includes everyone. We work to meet each person’s needs to make our programs physically and financially accessible.
-
PCH promotes safety in climbing. We practice and teach safe skills and adaptations for climbers indoors and outside.
The ParaCliffHangers Approach
In September 2019, two female paraclimbers decided to take their climbing belaytionship to a new level. Denny and Emily reflected that their experience in paraclimbing had profoundly affected their lives – emotionally, physically, and socially, and they wanted to capture that magic and support in their community in a way that opened access to the transformative effects of climbing and community to more people with disabilities.
With reflection on what climbing meant to them, backgrounds in law, medicine, and advocacy, and their combined experience with congenital and acquired disability, they started ParaCliffHangers (PCH), hoping to transform how people view a disability-inclusive community.
After a humble bake sale fundraiser at The Cliffs at LIC (currently Movement LIC) to acquire adaptive equipment, ParaCliffHangers kicked off. With the gym’s support, PCH was able to form their first accessible rock climbing chapter, which was both equitable for people with disabilities, and also created an environment that equally invited those with and without disabilities to the community and valued the contribution of all its participants.
Their next endeavor was to sponsor competitive paraclimbers on their journey to USAClimbing ParaNationals 2020. However, just as PCH trained for the competition, the unforeseen arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic halted their plans.
For individuals with disabilities, navigating a pandemic posed unique challenges, exacerbating existing physical and emotional struggles. Recognizing the profound impact on their community, PCH pivoted its efforts towards providing support during these trying times. They redirected our funds to organize outdoor trips, offering a safe space for paraclimbers to reconnect with nature and each other.
These excursions served as a lifeline providing much-needed connection and exercise amidst the isolation during the shutdown. As restrictions eased and gyms reopened, PCH adapted its programs to meet the evolving needs of our community. With Emily moving to the Bay Area, PCH became a national non-profit organization spanning the Northeast and California. They have continued to grow their chapters across the country since.
PCH’s dream is to empower individuals with disabilities to embrace the sport of rock climbing, both indoors and outdoors.
Join us on this journey as we celebrate the extraordinary spirit of paraclimbers everywhere. Together, we Overcome Mountains.
